Store-bought sets of golf clubs typically include the standard pitching wedge, which is the most common type of golf wedge and the kind most golfers have. But that’s not to say this is the only truestrike portable golf mat wedge you need, and it is not necessarily the best wedge for average golfers. If you want to add finesse and precision to your short game, it is the other three wedges you should consider.
What’s more, the pitching wedge is the least lofted wedge. Some would even go as far as to say that it is not really a wedge at all. Because of this, you may find it limiting, which is why you definitely want to upgrade your set with one or all of the remaining wedges:
Gap wedge
This golf wedge was literally designed to fill the gap in terms of loft. It has more loft than the pitching wedge but less than the other two types. A gap wedge shot is likely to travel between 90 and 110 yards. Despite the fact that this wedge is relatively new and generally sold separately from standard sets of golf clubs, it is an excellent choice for beginner golfers.
Why would we favor the gap wedge over other wedge types when offering recommendations for the best wedge setup for high handicappers? The gap wedge is a slightly better choice than pitching wedges due to greater bounce, which makes it easier for the ball to become airborne. It is also a somewhat better choice than lob and sand wedges because it has less bounce than they do, which makes it easier to get the club under the ball.
Lob wedge
A lob wedge is best suited for situations where you need to get the ball up in the air quickly, and the maximum distance you can expect to get with a lob wedge is about 70 yards. Although this wedge is usually sold separately, you can find sets that include this type of wedge.
Sand wedge
Contrary to what its name might indicate, the sand wedge is suitable for any environment, from soft to firm lies, although it was primarily designed to glide through the sand and enable players to get out of sand bunkers. The maximum distance you can get with this open-faced wedge is 90 yards.
The sand wedge has the widest sole of all the wedges and provides the widest bounce angle. The sand wedge is now widely considered a staple golf club and one of the best wedges for average and novice golfers. The sand wedge is also a popular choice of high handicappers.
